Organisational Culture – The Overlooked Key to Success with New Ways of Working

When organisations implement new work processes, such as Scrum or other Agile frameworks, the focus often falls on tools, processes, and structures. These are undoubtedly important, but one critical factor is frequently overlooked: organisational culture.

Without a conscious effort to address culture, new approaches risk losing their effectiveness – or failing entirely. This is a challenge we often encounter, and one that many consultants struggle to address.

At Better Change, we have the experience and expertise to help organisations shape a culture that supports new work processes and delivers lasting value. In this free webinar, we share:

  • A foundational introduction to the dynamics of organisational culture and its impact on employee behaviour and organisational success.

  • Practical tools and methods to analyse organisational culture – and how you can actively and effectively work to shape it.

Recorded: March 14, 2025

Key Takeaways

  1. Agile’s magic lies in culture – not process
The left side of the Agile Manifesto – individuals, collaboration, adaptability – drives culture, yet most implementations focus on the right side – processes, tools, plans – leading to mediocre results.

  2. Culture is behaviour – and it’s always changing
Culture is what we do, not what we say. It’s shaped by artefacts, values, and basic assumptions – Schein’s iceberg. The gap between claimed and lived values erodes trust and fuels turnover.

  3. The Competing Values Framework (CVF) reveals your blind spots
Every organisation needs a balance of Create – innovation, Collaborate – teamwork, Control – stability, and Compete – results. Weakness in one quadrant weakens the whole – and Agile thrives when Create is strong.

  4. Cultural change is complex – but leadership is the lever
There’s no recipe – change emerges from individual actions and intentions. Leadership behaviour is the only guaranteed way to shape culture. Use tools like the Plausibility Canvas to experiment and iterate.

  5. Start small – think big

Clarify the desired culture – aligned with strategy, tell illustrative stories, and launch targeted initiatives – structure, policies, metrics. Communicate relentlessly – and accept that progress is non-linear.

Why This Matters

Organisational culture is the invisible foundation of success – or failure. Ignore it, and even the best strategies will stumble. Address it, and you unlock engagement, adaptability, and results. Leadership behaviour is the catalyst – because culture doesn’t change without it.
